Energy Saving Tips
Saving energy is everyone's responsibility. Saving
energy means saving money. Here you will find a few ways to help reduce your energy consumption.
Lighting
- Turn off lights when not needed
- Remove or disconnect unnecessary light fixtures
- Replaced outdated fixtures with new, energy efficient fixtures
- Use CFLs wherever possible
- Install sensors to automatically turn lights on or off
- Open shades to take advantage of daylight
- Utilize timers or photocells for exterior lighting
- Replace incandescent “EXIT” signs with LED signs that use about 1/10th the power and last much longer
HVAC
- Clean or replace air filters regularly
- Inspect and repair any leaks in piping, air ducts, coils and fittings.
- Make sure there are no obstructions around radiators, air intake vents, etc. that prevent airflow.
- Reduce heating and air conditioning hours
- Utilize fans to reduce air conditioning in the summer and maintain heat in the winter
- Open windows to take advantage of comfortable weather
- Update outdated technologies (chillers, old motors, old units)
- Install digital thermostats to better regulate room temperature
- Install locks on thermostats to maintain control over temperature
Equipment
- Turn off computers, monitors, printers, etc. when not in use to conserve energy and prevent heat generation.
- Maintain equipment to ensure proper performance
- Utilize Energy Star Products
Water Heat
- Set your water heater to the lowest temperature setting
- Insulate water pipes and holding tanks
- Use hot water only when necessary
- Utilize low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators
- Maintain and fix your water system
Windows & Doors
- Keep external doors closed to prevent heat/cool air from escaping
- Block direct sunlight from shining in windows in the summer
- Let the sun in during the daytime in winter, but cover the windows at night.
- Use weather-stripping, caulk or plastic to cover leaks around windows, doors and outlets, etc.
